Pre-sessional English

Pre-Sessional Course Aims

Our Pre-Sessional English (PSE) courses in the UK and China* help you to raise your English language level to meet the entry requirements of your main course. They also prepare you to study in the field of art and design or business at UCA.

*Please note that due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the summer 22-week and 15-week pre-sessional courses will take place online rather than face-to-face.

What can you expect from the Pre-sessional English (PSE) courses?

Our Pre-Sessional English courses are unique as they are specifically designed for art and design or business students. The syllabus has been created in collaboration with UCA academic staff, and the course materials are created by UCA EAP tutors.

UCA’s PSE courses are project-based which means they are flexible enough to encompass the wide range of subjects taught at UCA and at the same time engage your creative thinking and imagination. The projects are closely tailored to the skills you will require on your degree course and follow current developments in the creative industries. Therefore, as well as improving your academic English skills such as academic writing, presentation skills, understanding lectures and referencing academic sources, you will also enhance your ability to analyse and evaluate, interpret project briefs, think critically, and problem-solve – all of which are key to achieving academic success at UCA.

Why should I take a Pre-sessional English course at UCA?

As well as improving your English level, attending a UCA PSE course has many other benefits:

  • improve your academic English skills
  • expand your creative arts or business vocabulary
  • develop your research skills
  • boost your confidence as a creative arts or business student in the UK
  • receive high-quality, personalised preparation for your life and studies at university
  • learn how to use the facilities and resources available to UCA students
  • start building social relationships across UCA and make new friends
  • experience university life in a supportive and safe environment before your main course begins
  • get to know the area and learn more about British and European culture to help you adjust to UK life
